After a slow start the varsity basketball team of Metcalf turned in a good record. Although the season was short, the Metcalf forces won most of their games.

The team started the season against the Holyoke Catholic Freshmen at the St. Jerome gym, Here they were led by Bill Flittner to a 31-25 win.

The following game was the first of a two game series between Metcalf and the Highlands held at the Lawrence Gym. The Metcalf hoopsters had a 17-11 lead at the half but the Highlands started to click and won a 33-31 thriller.

The team spent the next weeks preparing for the big alumni game staged during the Sport's Night at the Holyoke High Gym. Trailing by nine points at the half, Coach Leary's boys came back to within one point of the alumni squad. The final scare of this thrilling contest was 38-36 in favor of the alumni.

Anxious to get back in the winning column the Purple Charges scared a very decisive 36-21 victory over the Catholic Freshmen, being led by John Reidy and Dave Moriarty.

The curtain came down on the basketball season after Metcalf got revenge over the Highlands, by wining a 26-21 game. Co.-Capts. Lyle and Reidy sparked their teammates to this victory
