Pynchon, Henry Smith, his son-in-law, and Jehu Burr, in 1634. These pioneers planted nearly opposite the present site of Springfield, and resided there during the summer, but returned to Roxbury in the fall, probably to report conditions and progress to Pynchon, the chief projector of the new enterprise. This gentleman, founder of Roxbury and Springfield, a person of wealth and consequence in England, was connected with the affairs of the Massachusetts colony when it was organized in England, where he received the appointment of magistrate when Governor Winthrop received his commission, and accompanied him on the voyage to America.
