A Practical Guide to Effective School Board Meetings

CHAPTER XVIII.
SCHOOLS, VACATIONS, AND EXERCISES.


Rule 1. The schools of the city shall consist of Kindergarten, Elementary, Junior High, Senior High, Vocational, Continuation, Ungraded, Evening Schools, and Summer School.

Rule 2. The boundaries of the district of each school shall be those as established from time to time by the School Board.

Rule 3. The school year shall begin on the Tuesday following the first Monday in September. and shall close on the last Friday in June. It shall be divided into four terms. The first term shall continue for sixteen weeks, followed by a vacation of one week, and the three remaining terms for eight weeks each, with a vacation of one week between each term.

Rule 4. The following shall be holidays: Every Saturday, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Thanksgiving Day and the day following, Christmas Day, New Year's Day, Washington's Birthday, Patriots' Day, Good Friday, and Memorial Day. No school shall be suspended on any other regular school day except by permission of the Superintendent and a majority of the Board.

Rule 5. The hours of the school sessions shall be as follows:

High School
8:20 A.M. to 1:55 P.M.
Regular Session.
3:15 P.M. to 4:30 P.M.
Special Session.
Elementary and Junior High Schools

8:45 A.M. to 11:45 A.M.
1:30 P.M. to 3:30 P.M.
Kindergartens
8:45 A.M. to 11:45 A.M.
1:30 P.M. to 3:30 P.M.
Vocational School
8:00 A.M. to 12:00 P.M.
12:30 P.M. to 3:30 P.M.
Continuation School
8:00 A.M. to 12:00 P.M.
1:00 P.M. to 5:00 P.M.

In the Kindergarten and first two grades, the principals may, at their discretion, dismiss the pupils early. In no case, however, shall such pupils be regularly dismissed before 11:35 in the morning or 3:20 in the afternoon.

Rule 6. The Superintendent with the approval of the 'Board, may change the hours of school sessions to meet the need of a school district, but in no case shall the amount of time spent daily in school by the pupils be less than five hours, except in the kindergarten and the first two grades.

Rule 7. The recess of the High School shall not exceed twenty-five (25) minutes. In the elementary and junior high schools there shall he a ten minute outdoor recess in the forenoon session, and a five (5) minute recess in the afternoon session. No pupil shall he deprived of the recess period except for abuse of the privileges of recess, in which case he shall he given a short recess alone.

Rule 8. The opening exercises in all schools shall be held promptly at the time set for the beginning of the morning session. The exercises shall include the reading by the teacher of a portion of the Bible without commend, as required by Chapter 71, Section 31, of the Massachusetts General Laws.

Rule 9. In every school from time to dime there shall be held such exercises as will teach the pupils the lessons of love of home and country.

Rule 10. Graduation exercises shall be held in the Senior and Junior High Schools during the closing week of the final term of the school year.
