In the picture above you see the thirteen members of the first national Junior Honor Society at Metcalf. This new activity was founded in this school by Miss Sullivan, who applied for and received a charter from the National Honor Society Foundation. Under her sponsorship and direction, Chapter 696 was organized in our school.

Members of the society are chosen by a faculty committee composed of Miss Sullivan, Miss Moriarty, Mr. Leary, and Mr. Murphy.

The nine original members chose the following officers: Richard Stebbins, President; Judy Cain, Vice-President; Neil Sheehan, Treasurer; and Caroline O'Neill, Secretary.

Meetings of the society were held in Miss Sullivan's room during the activity period on Thursday, and within a very short time this new organization made itself felt in many ways. For instance, there was the January dance sponsored by the Honor Society, and no one will forget the impressive candle light ceremony put on before the whole school in the auditorium. Perhaps the greatest achievement of this group was the work they did for the "Big Show". Nearly every member of the Honor Society either took part in the show or served in some way to make the performance a very successful undertaking. Judy Cain as Tallulah Bankhead, was the featured performer, and she was ably supported by Richard Stebbins, Esther Whitmore, Richard Wing, Caroline O'Neill and Neil Sheehan, all charter members of the Metcalf National Junior Honor Society.

The aims of the Honor Society are as follows:

  1. To create an enthusiasm for good scholarship.
  2. To develop worthy school and community citizenship.
  3. To stimulate devoted service to school, community, and country.
  4. To encourage the development of trustworthy leadership.
  5. To instill exemplary qualities of character.
  6. To give suitable recognition to those students who attain and possess these qualities.
